Beta Eta History

The Beta Eta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma was installed at the University of Maryland on April 14, 1957 by the Beta Epsilon Chapter from Lycoming College in Pennsylvania. We are the 55th chapter of Tau Beta Sigma.

Beta Eta's charter members were Doris Ann Baumgardner, Caroline S. Cook Cherix, Mary Margaret DeNeane, Margaret Louise Foster, Margaret Jane Gates, Sally Gibbons, Judith Ann Hill, Laura Elizabeth Hinkle, Harriet Ann Husted, Helen Jeannette Juten, Aija Livins, Dorothy J. McCarty, Patricia Russell, Nancy Jean Nystrom, Jeanette Amanda Rudy, Marilyn Sanders, Phyllis Yvonne Snyder, and Patricia Alizabeth Tatspaugh. Dr. Hubert P. Henderson, who was director of bands when Beta Eta was installed, was the first to be awarded honorary membership in the chapter.

Beta Eta was preceded at the University of Maryland by a local organization called Upsilon Upsilon. This organization was founded in 1951 by the women of the University Bands.
